The Good Thing Is, You Can Turn It Off. #media #technology

The year isn’t 2243. Robots haven’t taken over. Technology hasn’t started controlling us (although that might just be an opinion). This isn’t a post-apocalyptic world, at least in the sense that AI or aliens have overpowered us.

It’s 2014, and that technology you have on your phone, on your laptop, on your tablet? It has a power button. The good thing is, you can turn it off.

It may seem in many ways the media consumes our lives – and in some sense, it does. There are certain things, like buying certain brands of food, that we can’t help. But in other ways, it’s up to us what we do with technology.

You can decide to take a day, or three days, or a week off from Twitter.*

You can just not log on to Facebook.**

If I really, really needed to, I could stop blogging here.***

There is a certain amount of control that you have when it comes to what you take in, and what you don’t. You don’t have to turn on that TV channel that annoys you. You don’t have to type up everything (yes, there are things that you have to type, obviously, but other times, you can choose to write with a pen and paper.)

You don’t have to listen to the music that everyone else listens to, or you could not listen to music at all, if you so chose. You don’t have play that online game. You do not have to watch that movie. You do not have to watch that television show.

Of course, you CAN do all of these things if you want to, but you don’t have to. Because you can turn it off. You can turn it all off, or some of it, or none of it at all. It’s up to you. You’re in control of technology and the media you consume.

*Obviously, you should tweet that you’re leaving, so that people don’t think you’re dead.

**This is a good idea in general, but please, let people know you didn’t die.

***This isn’t going to happen, or at least I hope it doesn’t. If I know of the reason that I’ll be leaving for a bit, I’ll be sure to leave a short blog post behind to let you know what’s happening.
